Heated Towel Rails Stainless steel or chrome, which is better?

There are a number of factors to consider when buying a heated towel rail. Amongst these will be things like heat output, the power source, the size and shape of the towel rail as well as how it looks in the bathroom i.e. do I go for a traditional ladder style or a designer look? The material that it is manufactured from is generally quite high up on the list of considerations as this translates directly into the quality of the product which is normally the 2nd most important factor. The most important buying decision however will be the cost to the customer.

When considering the quality of a heated towel rail it will come down to what it is made of and how it has been manufactured. The manufacturing materials will either be stainless steel or chrome-plated steel while the manufacturing process will involve components such as pipe-bending and drilling, welding, polishing and testing.

Stainless steel heated towel rails will be more expensive than chrome-plated ones and this is because stainless steel is more expensive. Stainless steel has a higher chromium content within the metal itself and as a result it is resistant to stains, corrosion and rust. It also has a better conduction capacity which means that it heats up faster, remains warmer for longer and results in an even distribution of heat throughout. All of these factors result in improved energy consumption and lower running costs over the lifetime of the towel rail.

Chrome-plated heated towel rails will result in a lower upfront investment but they have a shorter lifespan compared to their stainless steel counterparts and you may find yourself having to replace them every few years due to rust and corrosion damage of the underlying mild steel. Chrome plating is the technique of electroplating a thin layer of chromium onto a plastic or metal surface. It is effective as it results in a decorative mirror like finish however a disadvantage is a low cathode efficiency which translates into poor “throwing” power and uneven heat spots.

At Rhinorails all of our heated towel rails are handcrafted from 100% grade 304 stainless steel and come with a 25 year guarantee against manufacturing defects. We believe that the additional cost that you may have to pay upfront for a higher quality material will be worth the investment in the long term through a longer lasting product and reduced overall running costs.
